The Uttarakhand government has continued the registration process for the Char Dham Yatra, with registrations reaching into the lakhs.
The world-famous Char Dham Yatra is set to begin on April 30, marking the opening of the pilgrimage to Gangotri and Yamunotri Dham.
However, for the past six months, there has been no progress in improving the condition of the Gangotri and Yamunotri highways in Uttarkashi. Piles of debris still lie scattered at various places.
Although the Uttarakhand government is claiming to ensure a successful Char Dham Yatra, the ground reality reflects otherwise. Like last year, major roads remain in poor condition, filled with potholes, and clogged drains have not been cleared—neither the administration nor the government seems to be paying proper attention.
In Uttarkashi, where two major dhams—Gangotri and Yamunotri—are located, the condition of roads and bridges remains poor. Even though the District Magistrate continues to hold one meeting after another at the district collectorate, the ground reality tells a completely different story.
In Yamunotri Dham, proper parking arrangements are still not being made in Barkot town. Additionally, continuous landslides in areas like Bandarkot, Rathori, and Sher Pahad in Uttarkashi are causing significant problems for pilgrims during the yatra.
Uttarkashi District Congress President Manish Rana has raised questions over the government’s negligence and alleged corruption regarding the upcoming Char Dham Yatra. He stated that despite two prominent dhams being located in Uttarkashi, the BJP government has failed to improve road conditions over the past eight years. Moreover, despite spending lakhs of rupees at various locations, there is still widespread filth and mismanagement during the Char Dham Yatra.
